Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin began formal talks in Moscow on Tuesday.
Xi arrived in the Russian capital on Monday for a three-day state visit.
A Russian state-run news agency says the Chinese president earlier held talks with Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. Xi reportedly told him that he had invited Putin to visit China this year.
Xi and Putin are expected to discuss economic, energy and military-technical cooperation. After the summit, they are scheduled to sign a joint document.
Attention is now focused on how the two leaders will address issues such as the situation in Ukraine, amid rising tensions with the United States.
