The World Health Organization listed for emergency use on Thursday a coronavirus vaccine jointly developed by US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and Germany's BioNTech.
The WHO's Emergency Use Listing serves as a reference for developing countries that don't have their own screening systems for regulatory approval.
This is the first time that a COVID-19 vaccine has been added to the WHO list. WHO Assistant-Director General Mariangela Simao said that the organization and its partners are working night and day to evaluate other vaccines that have reached safety and efficacy standards.
She added that it's vitally important to secure the critical supply needed to serve all countries around the world and stem the pandemic.
The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has already been rolled out in the United States, Britain and other countries.
