Senior UN officials and US President Joe Biden are condemning Myanmar's military following the killing of over 100 civilians on Saturday.
Security forces in Myanmar have been firing day after day on civilians protesting the military coup. Many people have been killed and injured. A human rights group says 114 people died on Saturday, the most casualties for a single day since the coup.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, and the UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, Alice Wairimu Nderitu, issued a joint statement on Sunday.
They said the "shameful, cowardly, brutal actions of the military and police" must be halted immediately. They added that "the international community has a responsibility to protect the people of Myanmar from atrocity crimes."
The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Tom Andrews tweeted, "The UN Security Council can act against junta atrocities in Myanmar."
Andrews suggested that Council members should urgently produce a resolution on Myanmar that includes economic sanctions and stops the flow of weapons.
President Biden said the killings are terrible, absolutely outrageous and totally unnecessary. He indicated that the US government is considering additional sanctions.
