Hotel stays in Japan hit record high for April

The number of overnight stays at hotels and inns in Japan reached a record high for April. A weaker yen brought more visitors from abroad, and that pushed up overall numbers.

The Japan Tourism Agency puts the preliminary figure at over 50.9 million stays. That's up 11.9 percent from a year earlier.

Foreign guests jumped by 38.1 percent. Compared to the pre-pandemic level in April 2019, the figure was also up 16.5 percent.

Stays by Japanese residents rose 5 percent year-on-year, but they were down 4.1 percent from the same month in 2019.
